Mary Doland
Forestech
Mary works with the Timber Training Unit and is PA to the Campus
Manager. As an eMentor, she enjoys feeling useful and keeping abreast
of changes and new technology.
"I
feel that staff achieve greater efficiencies when technology
is used effectively. People new to IT feel better about
themselves or their role, when they’ve mastered the
basics. It gives them the confidence to attempt some of the
more complex
applications."
|
Recently,
a new staff member was only able to turn a PC on, and little
more. With help from Mary, he is now quite competent in MS
Word, Excel and Outlook. The
staff in Mary's Team have built up their skills, using
laptops to produce assessment instruments and training
plans in the field.
"Even
individuals who were dragged kicking and screaming into computers
are now
competent users and are not afraid to
ask for assistance."

Ruth
Downs
Educational Support and Service Unit
"I
applied for the role because I’m interested in IT and
eLearning. I’m asked every day by staff and students
to assist them in some way or other with using digital cameras,
scanners, burning CDs and setting up multimedia equipment."
"I
thought that by becoming an eMentor I could improve my skills
in eLearning and IT and pass on my knowledge
to others. Passing on knowledge is not
as easy as it first appears, and this is an area that I am enjoying
exploring further!"
"I've already assisted lots of people
with a wide range of enquiries." |

|
"The
greatest challenge of the role is keeping abreast of developments
in this ever-expanding area and passing the knowledge on so
that it is easily understood by a wide range of people with
varying skill levels."

Martin
Grundy
Hospitality
Martin is with the Hospitality & Service Industries Dept.
He is Coordinator for all cookery related programs and on the
job apprentices as well as Chef Instructor for Apprentices
and Commercial Cookery students.
"I
applied for the role as eMentor firstly to assist my team
members with work related computer skills, and secondly
to act as a refresher for myself in areas that I do not
use on
a regular basis." |
Martin
hopes to pass on useful skills to colleagues as many of
them are not very proficient with the use of computers. Martin's
department is very short on office and desk space so not
all staff have access to desks, let alone computers, when he
is free to assist.

Max
Horvath
Business and IT
Max
is IT Sub-Team Leader, Business & Information Technology,
and has been with EGTAFE for 4½ years. As
an eMentor he helps his team take up the opportunities which
IT and online
media provide.
"The role I believe is one of facilitating help and guidance to
my team firstly to develop an ease with these technologies,
followed by ways in which they can explore potential efficiencies to provide
our client base with improved access to information and resources."
|
 |
"One
win to-date for all has been the comprehensive posting of IT
course learning resources and assessment tools online for our
students; this has enabled
a more flexible approach to the learning need."
Recently,
two students became ill and could not make it to classes but,
as both have home internet
access they've been able to keep up-to-date.
Max sees his greatest challenge as helping colleagues answer
the "what’s
in it for me" questions and to switch to new technological practices.

Lance
Martin
Automotive Studies
An automotive instructor and a good team player, Lance thought
Industrial Studies should be represented on the eMentors team
and volunteered.
"I
think that ICT will be an integral part of learning in the
future and we need to be up to date with the changes."
As well as gaining further skills himself he passes them
on to other members of his team so they also can advance
with
the technology.
|
"One
of the things I have found over the years of being a trainer
is that the more interest you have in a subject the faster
you seem to learn. To that end I find my understanding and
progress
in my night class (C2 advanced) has been great. If
I can get other team members a little more enthusiastic then
acceptance
of the technology will progress quicker."
"The
biggest challenge to me will be being able to absorb the knowledge
and remember
it to the point that I can help solve any problems quickly."

Kit
Neesham
Social Sciences
Kit
is the Coordinator/ Teacher of Certificate I in Work Ed
at Fulham campus and is also in the TICC. She's been using
Online Learning through TAFEVC with her students for about
6 years.
"I
find it a great additional teaching tool as well as being
an ideal way of expanding the students' knowledge and expertise
in using computers generally...Interacting
with others online is challenging and rewarding. I find it all
great fun."
|
|
Being
an eMentor helps Kit stay in touch with IT developments
and she also attends as much PD as she can manage - some
online. She sees her biggest challenges
are finding enough time and making sure she has the expertise
to help
people when they need it.

Scott
Outreach – Mallacoota
"As
the Institute's Mallacoota Outreach Coordinator, I plan,
develop, co-ordinate and facilitate the provision of VET
programs within the local community. I
also research community and industry needs for education and
training and help develop strategies to meet them. As
well, I represent the East Gippsland Shire and provide information
and referral services for local ratepayers."
"I
was more than happy to take on this responsibility and was
very happy that Outreach Services had been included
in this
process. Personally, I hope to gain additional
skills in handling ICT issues and effectively disseminating
the information
to my
team. I
hope to provide my colleagues with a ready point of access on their
initial ICT enquiries, and anything I can’t
solve immediately, I follow up.
"My
biggest hurdle is the distance to other Outreach Centres and
the Bairnsdale campus. Teleconference, email etc.
help, but sometimes
it's good to see people face-to-face."
