Periodical is another term for
a magazine or a journal.
When you require up-to-date information on current or “in the news” topics (as
discussed in selecting appropriate
sources of information) periodicals and newspapers are the best sources of
information.
Rather than browsing through back copies of periodicals and newspapers you can
access their contents by using an index.
Periodical Indexes may be in printed form, on CD-ROM or on the Internet. They
enable you to search for articles about your topic, by subject, author, date,
publication title and more.
Many periodical indexes provide the full text of the article. Others just provide
an abstract or summary of the article’s content.
Some examples of Periodical Indexes which are held in libraries are:
AEI – Australian Education Index
AEI is a database of articles
relating to education and related fields, including educational
research, teacher education, curriculum, educational psychology
and policy administration.
ARCH – Australian Architecture
A database of articles
relating to architects, architecture, building, interior design
and landscape architecture.
Gulliver
Gulliver is the name for a suite of databases accessible from any public
library in Victoria.
Gulliver's databases provide full text of over 1000 magazines, journals
and periodicals plus many other sources of up-to-date information such
as books and newspapers.
Informit APA-FT
(Australian Public Affairs – Full Text)
Mainly indexing Australian
periodicals Informit provides bibliographic
details, abstracts and some full text articles.
InfoTrac
InfoTrac is a database of over 3000 journals or magazines
which includes a comprehensive range of content including indexed,
full text and imaged publications. The InfoTrac database
is customised by the subscribing library, so the content will closely
match the subjects taught of the subscribing Institute.
Check with your TAFE Institute Library to see if they have a current
subscription to any of the periodical indexes listed or ask at
your local library for details.
