As a student you can borrow items
(books, videos, periodicals) from a number of libraries. You
can do this in person or request items by mail, email, fax or
phone.
From Your Home Library
Your
Home Library is the library at the Institution where you are
currently enrolled.
Borrowing Items
Students enrolled at
an Institute receive a student identification card (ID). In
most cases this card doubles as your library card. If you cannot
get to your Home Library you can borrow via a postal service.
Most libraries have a postal service available for students
studying off campus.
Usually, the library
pays for the forwarding of materials requested, but students are
responsible for the cost of returning them. For this reason, sometimes
it might also be useful to use a TAFE, university or public library
in your local area.
Requesting Items
When making a request
via mail, email, fax or phone you will need to provide your name
and postal details as well as your student number.
To request materials,
the author, title and publication date should be given. Call numbers
are also useful if you know them. If you don’t have this
information, give as much as you can to ensure you receive the
item you require.
e.g. Oppenheimer, Priscilla (Author) Top-Down Network
Design (Title) 2nd (Edition) Indianapolis, IN : Cisco
Press., 2004 (Publisher and Publication Date) 004.65 OPP (Call
number)
To request articles appearing
in periodicals you will need to provide details about the author(s)
of the article, title of the article, name of the periodical, date
of issue (month or number) and pages required.
e.g. " Watch out for spies with friendly faces: otherwise
benign hardware and software can be used to track your behavior.
(title of article) PC world (periodical name), v23 i4 (Volume number,
issue number), April 2005 (issue month), p39 - 41 (pages)
Or: What great managers
do. Harvard Business Review, v83 i3, March 2005, p70 – 79
Reserving Items
If you have found an
item on the catalogue which is currently on loan, you may reserve
it, which means that you will become next in line to borrow
the item. Students who are registered borrowers with their
Home Library can place reservations or holds through their
institute library catalogue. Contact your Home Library for assistance.
Borrowing From Other TAFE and University Libraries
Students who are enrolled in a
tertiary level course (which runs for at least one year) may
borrow in person from other Victorian TAFE and University libraries.
If you wish to do this you will need a "Reciprocal borrowing" or
CAVAL card, which you need to obtain from your Home Institute
library first.
To obtain a CAVAL card
you need to complete an application form, which can also be forwarded
to you on request by your Home Library. A pamphlet is available
from your Home Library, and further information about reciprocal
borrowing and libraries taking part in this scheme can be obtained
from the CAVAL website.
Borrowing From TAFE Libraries
in other States
Students who live in one state
and are enrolled in a TAFE course in another may borrow in person
from participating TAFE libraries, through the National
Reciprocal Borrowing Scheme. For details of this scheme and
a list of the participating libraries, access the website. To
become a National Reciprocal Borrowing member contact your Home
Library.
Borrowing From Public Libraries
Membership of public libraries
is free. You may become a member of any public library by visiting
your local branch, filling out a registration card and providing
evidence of your current address. Each public library system
has different conditions for borrowing, the number of items that
can be borrowed and the loan period. Check with your public library
for details about their many and varied services.
Some public libraries
have more than one branch. Items that are on the shelf at other
branches can be sent to the one you normally use. Some libraries
charge for this service. A listing of Victorian public libraries
and their online catalogues can be found on the Libraries Victoria website.
Reserving Items in Public
Libraries
If you require an item
that is currently out on loan, you may reserve this item. Reservations
can be placed on items at some libraries through their online catalogues,
or ask the librarian to help you when you next visit the library.
Most libraries charge a fee for this service.
Inter Library Loans
Inter library loans are when a
request for an item from an Australian TAFE, University or Public
library is made by a librarian on your behalf. If you are unable
to obtain the item you want in any other way, an inter library
loan can be arranged through your Home Library or your local
public library. There are costs involved, so check with the library
before you proceed with this option.
